Morgan was tasked to create a new Liberty design in 1876 when U.S. Mint Director Henry Richard Linderman initiated redesign efforts for the nation’s silver coins. Morgan used Anna Willess Williams as a model for Liberty and the coin became one of the most popular in the history of all American coinage.

The obverse of each copper Morgue Anne no longer features the beautiful portrait of Williams, representing American freedom. Instead, the virus has caused Liberty’s skin to rot, her hair to deaden and the flowers to wilt on her left-facing image. Her teeth can be seen through her decaying skin, along with her spine, bones and muscles. Each round is inscribed with its denomination, along with MORGUE ANNE and 2017.

The reverse is a reminder of a dangerous new era, featuring a biohazard symbol covered in blood splatter. Inscriptions include CURRENCY OF THE APOCALYPSE, ZOMBUCKS, the round’s weight and fineness, and the Provident Metals compass.
