A floating head penny is a Lincoln cent error where Abraham Lincoln’s head appears detached from his shoulders due to excessive die polishing, which removes part of the neckline.

HOW IT HAPPENS:
When mint employees over-polish the dies to remove scratches or "die clash" marks, they accidentally polish away the metal that forms the line of Lincoln’s shoulder and neck, making the head look like it is "floating".
