Professionally Authenticated Mint Error
A partial collar mint error occurs when a coin blank sits improperly in the minting press, causing it to be only partially confined by the metal retaining collar during the strike. The restrained portion remains normal, while the unconfined section expands outward, resulting in a distinct beveled, stepped, or "railroad rim" edge.
A "clad mint error", most commonly known as a missing clad layer, occurs when one or both of the outer nickel-alloy layers fail to bond to a coin's pure copper core. This creates a visually dramatic coin that is copper on one side and silver on the other.
